Same issue for me, tested on 3 different computers:

The spine.log contains the following:

Downloading: Spine 3.7.09-beta Trial

Hello! I ve wanted to install Spine on my mac os X yosemite but I could not. There is a message about the server.

I don't know if there is because my internet connection (which is not sure cause I've tested with heavier software and worked)

I'm having the exact same problem (2 months after the last post I see here) trying to run the just downloaded trial version: server could not be contacted. Even if I don't have my firewall enabled. So could this be the same problem be back again?

I already have an older version of Spine installed on the same machine (I didn't run both at the same time), but I just want to look at the latest version to find out if I will upgrade later on. Could that cause this issue? Should it be possible to have both the registred (older) version of spine and the new trial version (in another folder) installed?

My guess would be your hardware or software firewall or other network configuration is blocking Spine for connecting to the server. Posting your spine.log file might help:

Windows: <user home folder>\SpineTrial\spine.log
Mac: <user home folder>/Library/Application Support/SpineTrial/spine.log
Linux: <user home folder>/.spinetrial/spine.log

However, likely it just says the server can't be reached. The server is definitely up all the time, so something is stopped Spine from communicating.

Yes, you can have both the full version of Spine and the Spine trial installed at the same time without any problems.

@Nate I finally know what was the problem. Although I tested everything with firewall, anti-virus and everything off (I use Eset), there happens to be a SSL setting that Eset didn't switch off even when it states everything is disabled.

I found out that the problem lies in Eset Internet Security though because I had another strange network-problem lately with using Composer to install php-packages. That was a very long debug session at that time, but this solved it. So I just tried to see if this also fixes my issue installing Spine Trial earlier... and it did!

So for your information, and in case other people are having the same problem I had and are using Eset, this was the blocking setting [also see screenshot in attachment]:

My problem was that Eset was set per default to check the SSL/TLS communication, but somehow that is causing problems with some programs, like Composer and Spine. Strangely some other programs work fine with it, like NPM or other software I use that need connections with servers via SSL. So I'm not sure why some programs are ok with it and others don't but at least this does the trick:

- Rightclick on Eset-icon in the notification area of the taskbar and click 'Advanced Setup'

• Open the 'Web and Email'-'tab' on the left and than maximize the 'SSL/TLS' panel on the right
• If you switch off 'Enable SSL/TLS protocol filtering' and click OK to close all Eset dialogs, you can install Spine without a problem, so that solves the issue.
• But if you like to keep this setting enabled, than click on 'edit' next to 'List of SSL/TLS filtered applications' to see if Spine is in the list. If it is, just select it and click the delete-button. If you now restart Spine (and Eset has SSL/TLS protocol filtering mode set to 'Interactive mode' in the panel you have open) Eset will popup a window to ask you if you like to scan the connection. Just choose not to and Esets skips scanning the SSL connection for Spine. problem solved![/i]

This took me a long time to figure out and I'm glad I finally figured it out and got Spine Trial working now, so I'm posting this to maybe help others having the same problem with Spine in combination with Eset.

Some people I have to show Spine to are trying to install the trial, but one of them says the installation process gets stuck here:

He says he's been waiting for about 2 hours for that step to be completed :bigeyed:
I already suggested him to restart the setup with admin privileges, but that's no use.
Any clue on what's possibly going wrong?

Ok seems it has ben solved. A simple PC reboot was enough to fix it.

The Windows installer requests admin privileges, so that shouldn't be a problem. The next thing it does after creating folders is set the permissions of the folders. Maybe the Windows has strange permissions configured? I'm not sure if any message would show up in the UI that it set the permissions, so can't tell if it got past that. We'll add logging to a file in 3.9 so we can better debug the install process. After setting folder permissions then it sets a Windows firewall rule, then creates start menu shortcuts, then it's done.

If you kill the installer process using Task Manager, are there files in C:\Program Files (x86)\Spine Trial? I think there will be and SpineTrial.exe should run fine from there, since the installer got stuck after doing most of its work. At least then they can run the trial. I would love to fix it properly, but I'm not sure what exactly has gone wrong.
