  • Help! I can't get clipping masks in Skin Placeholders to work. : (

Hello!
I've made a clipping mask for a character, then set the parent for the clipping mask which gives me my start and end 'scissors icons', like so:

This lets me control what is effected by the clipping mask in the Draw Order:

However, my character has different skins, and each skin has a slightly different shape, so I need to use a different shaped mask. I put my clipping mask in a skin placeholder, but then disaster strikes, I lose my 'scissor icons.'

Now I cannot control what get's effected in the Draw Order. It appears everything above 'FaceMask_end' is being affected by the clipping mask.

The only things I want effected are:

-Pet_PupilR
-Pet_PupilL
-Pet_Mouth
-Pet_Eyes
-Pet_Cheeks

How do I get my 'siccors icons' back? Am I doing something wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks! : )

To address the issue of clipping masks in skin placeholders, you can indeed use different clipping masks for different skins by placing them inside a skin placeholder. However, it seems like the problem arises when the clipping mask is not properly affecting the intended slots in the draw order. When you place a clipping mask in a skin placeholder, ensure that each skin has its own clipping mask with the correct shape and draw order settings. You should verify that the end slot for each clipping mask is set correctly to ensure it only affects the desired slots. If the 'scissors icons' are missing, it might be due to the draw order not being set correctly for the specific skin. Double-check the draw order for each skin to ensure that the clipping mask is positioned correctly relative to the slots it should affect.

Thanks Spinebot. . . this gives me something to chew on. . . Albeit, I can't see anything wrong in the setup. The instant I put the clipping mask in a skin placeholder I lost the scissors icons.

Hmm. . . when I move my clipping mask out of the Skin Placeholder I get my scissor icons back.

But when I put it back in the Skin Placeholder the scissors disappear again.

I might be missing something really obvious. But I can't seem to figure this out. D :

Hmm. . . I deleted all my masks and built them from scratch. . . and now everything appears to be working. My new clipping mask is no longer clipping everything above it.

One thing I noticed that I didn't see before was this handy field, End slot:

Even though my handy 'scissor icons' aren't showing up (is this a bug? it feels like a bug), I can still see where the mask is supposed to be ending, which was crazy-helpful for troubleshooting. : ) I can't believe I missed that handy little field before.

Still though, I do sorely miss my handy scissor icons, and I miss seeing things affected by clipping masks being highlighted in red in the Draw Order section.

But regardless, everything is working the way it should now, so I'm a happy camper! Just wanted to do a follow-up post incase this helps anyone in the future.

Eidrog Indeed, when the clipping attachment belongs to a skin, the highlighting of the clipped slots and the scissors icon indicating the start and end slots in the draw order node in the tree view seem to disappear.
As far as I can tell, this has not been the case since 4.2, but has been the same behaviour since earlier versions, so it seems that this is not a bug, but simply a feature that was missed. As you pointed out, the highlight and scissors icons should be displayed when the skin to which the clipping attachment belongs is active, so I have created an issue here for improvement: EsotericSoftware/spine-editor841

Thanks for the reply! : )

Right! 'Bug' isn't the correct term - it is working after all! But it sure would be a nice quality of life feature to have the red highlighting and scissor icons! : D

      All the best!
