I could not export this morning due to a prompt that instructed me to to reinstall spine to update to the newest launcher. I updated the launcher to 4.1.10 (Spine version 41.11 ENT) and the export window became unlocked for me. However, no matter what file format I export out... I get unreadable files. I use Spine 2D as well as After Effects to do my job as an animator. When importing PNGs into AE, some of the frames are not loading or do not display correctly. When importing AVIs or MOVs they will not load at all, claiming it is an unsupported file format. When I try to play either of the video files in Windows Media Player or VLC, I get the same error as I do in After Effects... the file format is unsupported. I have played with the settings, tried to export only small portions of the animations, I've tried changing the resolution, I've tried multiple Spine files, including those I have successfully exported from before... and I'm getting the same issue. I'm at a loss and could really use some help. I have attached my setting for the two file formats I NEED and use the most, the errors prompts I am getting, as well as the log file.

Sorry you are having trouble!

Note there are 2 errors in your spine.log:

...WG\psd\WG.mov (The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process)

That doesn't explain the problem you are having though.

I am able to export the spineboy-pro example project using the default MOV export settings: test.mov Does that play for you?

Can you post a (small) MOV file you exported? It would also be helpful if you can post a problematic PNG file. You can email files for privacy: contact@esotericsoftware.com

Your .mov file imports into AE just fine. I'm going to try and reexport a .mov and use that if the quality of the render is good enough. Although I would much prefer to be able to use .AVI or .PNG sequences. The PNG sequence files looks fine in explorer... but weirdly doesn't import correctly in AE as if some of the files are missing when they are very clearly not. This might be an AE problem... or spine is exporting corrupt PNGs in the same way they are exporting corrupt .AVIs. When I asked other animators to see if they could export my file, they would be prompted to update the launcher to 4.1.10 and upon doing so they too are no longer able to export AVIs and PNG sequences.
They suggested I export my work out to 4.0 as a json and rolback Spine to 4.0 so that I can export at the quality I need.
I appreciate your help and patience. I will be emailing my files shortly.

Update:
I downgraded to 4.0 for Spine and the exporter is still throwing corrupted files. I realized that even though I downgraded spine, it did not downgrade the launcher which I believe is what is causing the issues.

Thanks for the email.

The wg-test.mov and the AVI and MP4 files in the corrupted exports folder played for me just fine using Pot Player. I've asked a team member with AE to try it there (tomorrow, it's night for him now).

Spine 4.0 uses our own code for exporting video. Some users reported that some players refused to play the videos, while other players are fine. We have been unable to determine why that happens, as we are writing the video formats according to their specs. Here's a user who reports differences in colors on many different players. Video playback is complex and difficult to get right.

Spine 4.1 uses ffmpeg for exporting video. That's an extremely popular open source library which should produce video files that are widely compatible. it also provides more codecs and other options.

If you go back to 4.0 and still see video playback problems, my guess is it's your player being unable to deal with the video files. Does AE tell you what codecs it's using?

Both 4.0 and 4.1 export PNGs the same way, except 4.1 adds optimization options. Those use technology that is in the latest launcher to reduce the file size of the exported PNGs. If you uncheck the Optimization checkboxes then it should export PNGs identical to 4.0.

Figuring out why PNGs don't open correctly is much easier than video. If you can post or email a PNG that doesn't open correctly, we can take a look.

Actually he tried now. He was able to open wg-test.mov and WG-eyes.mp4 in AE, but not WG.avi:

HandBrake was able to open WG.avi. It's hard to say why AE doesn't like the AVI!

We exported an AVI with the default settings (PNG codec) and AE failed. Unchecked Transparency, still failed. AE can load AVIs using JPEG or MPEG4 codecs. Could it be that AE doesn't load AVI that uses PNG? If it can load MOV using PNG, maybe that is the way to go.
