    So I guess everything that is above the clipping mask slot is affected by it.
    But I would like to have an object in front of an object that is masked, but not affected by the mask.
    What is the best way to do this?

      You can set the End slot property, it allows you to set the slot which clipping will end. Please see the following page of the user guide for more information:
