Meshes vary greatly in shape and purpose. This blog post categorizes meshes into 3 broad types, making it easier to decide how to create meshes.

Thanks for the post, Erika! I really need that details on Bag meshes. Right now rigging a duffel bag. Will update in this thread if I have questions.

I'm a relative noob to Spine and having some difficulty teaching myself by following the available online tutorials.. =[

For example, a moderately detailed description of how this simple animation was made would be exponentially helpful.

Hello, of course we have that too.
I'm glad a Spine tip worked exactly as intended: getting you curious about a particular aspect of Spine you could also do! :D

Here's some resources about meshes (the third one features several cubes):
Blog: Mesh creation tips: vertex placement
Blog: A taxonomy of meshes
Blog: Mesh weight workflows

Here we explain how this same setup was used on heads:
Owl example: Head
Mix and Match example: Face control

We also show this technique in several occasions during lives on twitch, here's the page that collects them all:
Spine: Twitch
hint: If you search for "head control" or "2.5D" in the page, you'll be able to find the exact moments during the streams where these explanations take place, plus, there's also several examples you can download. :D

Can I find the "backpack" source files somewhere?

Thank you, Erika =]

Sure! If you're referring to the backpack inside the mix and match project, just switch to the example tab in your welcome screen to open the project, or download it from the blue button in the top right of the page next to the animation!

The Mix & Match project has a purse. I was looking for this backpack guy as it has more complex bones.....

Thanks again =]

edit ---

Here's also the moment of the live where I rig that backpack in case you're curious: https://youtu.be/0yEIMe7WAO0?t=4354
